Sono due giorni che ho il seguente problema, o meglio, la nostra amata sLaCkWaRe si incanta all'avvio, dopo che la faccio partire arriva a:

• hda: ModelloHD

E si incanta, se premo il tasto reset lo schermo diventa nero, e il pc resta in uno stato simile allo standby, mentre se premo il tasto per spegnerlo non succede nulla, anche se le tengo premuto 5 secondi che di regola dovrebbe spegnersi, quindi per spegnerlo dovrei spegnere l'UPS...
Dopo molti tentativi, accendo e spengo, parte e poi non ho nessun tipo di problema.

Un altro problema, che ormai esce sempre, è quando carica la partizione reiserfs dove ho appunto sLaCkWaRe, mi esce questo messaggio, o meglio, un messaggio simile:

• Warning: The dma in your hard drive is turned off etc...

Come potrei risolvere?

Intanto non hai abilitato DMA e lì dipende dal Kernel devi ricompilarlo abilitandolo. [A meno che il tuo HD non sia abbastanza vecchio e non usi il DMA].
Per il problema che non ti si pianta...hmm.. intanto dacci un po' di info...Kernel compilato da solo?Immagino di sì ho visto solo ora che hai il 2.17.15 .Quello che ti installa la Slack dava problemi? HD ide o sata? Etc...

Il Kernel non è la prima volta che lo compilo, comunque si pure con quello di default [2.4.31] si pianta...
Pensi che dovrei attivare come built-in anche Enable DMA only for disks?
Con il 2.6.17.4 non avevo nessun tipo di problema

Quindi aggiungendo cio' che ti ho detto io prima dovresti risolvere.

Nulla esce sempre questo messaggio:

• Warning: The dma in your hard drive is turned off etc...

Ti sconsiglio di aggiungere in quanto poi i lettori ottici (dvd/cd) non avrebbero il dma attivato e incapperesti in un po' di problemi...

Hai provato a usare hdparm?

Enable DMA only for disks (IDEDMA_ONLYDISK)

This is used if you know your ATAPI Devices are going to fail DMA
Transfers.

If your PCI system uses IDE drive(s) (as opposed to SCSI, say) and
is capable of bus-master DMA operation (most Pentium PCI systems),

the "hdparm" utility to enable DMA for drives for which it was not
enabled automatically. By default, DMA is not enabled automatically
for these drives, but you can change that by saying Y to the
following question "Use DMA by default when available". You can get
the latest version of the hdparm utility from
<ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/hardware/>.

Read the comments at the beginning of <file:drivers/ide/ide-dma.c>

It is safe to say Y to this question.

Prova con hdparm -d1 /dev/hda ...

A me verrebbe da pensare a un problema hardware per il primo punto, tanto più che hai iniziato ad avere problemi senza aver messo le mani sul kernel e che dopo un po' di tentativi funziona...

Prova comunque con una distro live per vedere che succede...

Se possibile fai qualche test di basso livello dell'hd (ci sono spesso anche software specifici diagnostici delle case produttrici...)

Se possibile, mantieni sempre un backup aggiornato dei tuoi dati...

Ah, con hdparm guarda poi i vari settaggi con hdparm -v /dev/hda e fai un po' di test con hdparm -t /dev/hda...

Allora il messaggio del DMA disattivato, è dato a fsck che dice che il DMA è disattivato, e quindi sarà lenta la ricerca degli errori...
Non penso sia Hardware perchè ora ti sto scrivendo, e anche perchè Windows parte

Io comincerei a pensare ad un'errata configurazione del kernel, visto che dici che con Win funziona...

io ora sto digitando da slackware, sul fatto che win funzionava e quando linux non parte, mi spiego meglio, ora lo posso riavviare quante volte voglio, va benissimo, però questa notte, siccome lo spengo il pc, la mattina lo vado a riaccendere e non parte... però, dopo 6,7 volte che spengo e accendo l'ups si riprende e mi fa partire slackware... il kernel l'ho configurato come sempre, il problema è da poco, da quando ho il 2.6.17.5... Quindi come dovrei fare per riattivare il dma? devo compilarmi il kernel dando make mrproper?

A mio parere dovresti ricompilare, ponendo attenzione sia ai parametri del tuo hardware (in specifico il chipset della motherboard) sia a quelli relativi al DMA.
make mrproper cancella tutte le eventuali impostazioni di configurazione precedenti

Così a occhio (ma potrei sbagliarmi) sembra che tu non abbia inserito il supporto al tuo chipset...
